2019 Academy Award Nominations

Updated: Mar 9, 2021

Hello, everyone! Sorry for the extensive delay. I was so into the Christmas season and the New Year – among other things – that I gapped on updating you about my ventures into the entertainment realm.

Well, to start things off, let's reflect on the Oscar nominations this morning. As is to be expected with many award shows, there came plenty of surprises, both good and bad.

To start off, some of the movies that I'm surprised didn't make it into the Oscar nomination lists included Won't You Be My Neighbor? and Eighth Grade. Not that I've seen them, but from I understood from the collective audience reviews concerning these films, I was somewhat expecting more vivid recognition for films such as these.

Now, as for the good surprises? Well, there are some that I can easily pinpoint. First off, one of the films that I have seen, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, got more Oscar love than I was expecting it to. But at the same time, I'm really glad to see it get such recognition, because it really is such an odd, quirky, and unexpectedly funny film.

But the biggest surprise – and just what I was hoping was going to happen – falls down to Black Panther and its historic nomination for Best Picture. This is historic because technically, Black Panther is a superhero movie, and this genre of movies were usually frowned upon by the Oscars before then. It makes this milestone even greater because of it. But besides that, I think it deserved such a high honor because of how well it portrayed African culture through its superhero lens, and how it ties into many struggles in our ever-changing lives.
